Tutor

Mark Hinchcliffe

Level

Over the 2 day course you will indulge in the joy of applying colour to a whole range of subject matter. Pure, mixed and blended. You will explore colour combinations which evoke harmony and discord, intensity and subtlety, power and delicacy. Experimentation on day 1 will focus on stretching your colour palette to reveal new potential from humble colours you use week in and week out. As well as introducing you to a wider range of different colours. They will be juxtaposed to create a shift your perception of space, direction and emotion.

Day 2 will explore this release of colour in real and abstract studies. Mass and volume will play a part as you explore the work of Morandi, Matisse, Rothko and Richter. You will be introduced to applying colour with a range of mark-making techniques which push beyond the daubs of a paintbrush. You will also feel the power of colour by working on a larger scale and explore how your whole body can shape the impact and dynamism of colour. You can draw inspiration from the explosion of flowers set within the grounds of Picton, where you may wish to work en plein air as well as in the dedicated studio space.

Portrait Painting in Oils

Dates

28th & 29th November 2015

Tutor

Mark Hinchcliffe

Price

£120
(minimum of eight students)

Over the 2 day course you will be guided through the whole portrait painting process from start to finish using oils. A live model is included so that sight-size and comparative drawing approaches can be explored. You will quickly learn how to build up the head mass using angles, planes and measurements. The initial drawing will move on to blocking-in shadow shapes and under-painting. Day 1 will also include skin tone mixing exercises and the articulation of a 2 tone silhouette. With this structure in place you will be ready to experiment with layering, blending and glazing.

On day 2 you will consider the torso and the whole figure while exploring various "fat over lean", alla prima and direct painting techniques. The drama of a Caravaggio painting will be compared to the direct application of paint onto a canvas in the work of "the Fauves". The contrast from highlights to shadows will be experimented with while developing close tonal ranges. By the end of the course you will be familiar with a variety of techniques and approaches which can be used as a springboard into developing your own portrait style and practise.

Still Life: Capturing the Sensation of Light

Dates

29th, 30th, 31st January 2016

Tutor

Mark Hinchcliffe

Price

£190
(minimum of five students)

Over the 3 day course you will learn still life techniques from the old masters as well as artists working in the genre today. You will be guided through the compositional and structural build-up of a still life, from the initial drawing to painted masterpiece. On day one you will explore angles, planes and space and different ways of building up form. The light pouring into the dedicated studio space is ideal for reflective surfaces and capturing shape detail. The objects will be put into context with beautifully draped backdrops and tables, although you may wish to draw inspiration from the stunning flowers at Picton by drawing and painting a floral celebration.

On day two you will explore how to create different textural effects to capture a range of materials. Form and texture will build together as paint daubs mix with deft highlight flicks. You will focus on the mastery of Chardin and how he builds balance and harmony while moving from dark tonal shadows to intense, radiant highlights. You will be also experimenting with colour mixing.

On day three you will also explore further, oil and acrylic painting techniques while exploring chiaroscuro effects and how to create a range of contrasting tones within your work. Classic motifs will be explored and re-imagined with the help of the work of Morandi, Cezanne and Theresa Kasun. The will be in a great position at the end of the course to pour the sensation of light into your still life work, now and in the future.
