Short Art Courses

How to Paint Like the Old Masters

Dates

26th, 27th, 28th February 2016

Tutor

Mark Hinchcliffe

Price

£190
(minimum of five students)

Over the 3 day course you will learn how to paint like the Old Masters using traditional oil painting techniques which explore the different qualities of oil paints and myriad of mediums, oils and varnishes available to paint with. You will explore the compositional build up which leads into layers of paint and glazes. You will also compare you techniques to acrylic painting as well as an 'alla prima' approach employed by the great Impressionist painters whose focus was the effect of light rather than the build up of pure colour.

On day one you will be exploring how to grid and scale your painting whether this is in response to a still life, a portrait or a landscape. You will gets to grips with under-painting and a monotone grisaille method will help you to identify and build up tonal values and contrast. The use of line will be compared to the use of shape as you venture further into the compositional elements of your painting.

On day two you will add local colour to your studies exploring pure colour as well as glazes. You will experiment at this point with different 'lotions and potions' from the dizzying array of painting mediums available to you. Colour mixing will be explored alongside the transparent and opaque nature of different oil paints. There will also be time to consider working light to dark as well as warm and cool colours in terms of value and regression.

On day three you start to pull together the different elements so that your painting takes shape which gives you insight into the whole process as you look to continue to build up your techniques and skills beyond the course. This is really a realisation of how long it takes for a work to build up in oils. Having said this there will be time to work in an 'alla prima' example so that you experience the different approach. By the end of the course you will have new skills and techniques you will want to hone in future work as you strive to become the next Rembrandt.

Sutherlands Landscapes

Dates

25th, 26th, 27th March 2016

Tutor

Mark Hinchcliffe/Sarah Poland

Price

£190
(minimum of five students)

Over the 3 day course you will learn about the esteemed and influential British Artist, Graham Sutherland who was inspired and deeply affected by the Pembrokeshire landscape which saw him the take organic forms of hills, rocks and waterways and twist them into surrealist forms. He had a close connection with Picton Castle, establishing the main gallery bears his name in 1976.

On day one you will start to explore the Pembrokeshire coast, walking in the footsteps of Sutherland who is quoted as saying that this is where he "began to learn painting". You too will be inspired by the "twisted gorse on the cliff edge...the flowers and damp hollows...the deep green valleys and the rounded hills and the whole structure, simple and complex.

On day two you will explore Sutherland's technique and use of colour in more detail. Focusing on inlets and waterways, you will draw inspiration and understanding from his sketchbooks and how imagery translates into final paintings. You will start to re-imagine the landscape in to surrealist forms and let your imagination loose.

On day three you will pull together your collection of studies and start to work towards final compositions. But not before visiting yet more stunning locations. After a 30 year gap, in 1967, Sutherland returned to Pembrokeshire and quickly realised that he was far from exhausting Pembrokeshire's inspiration and artistic potential. After 3 days you will feel the same pull that has drawn artists to the county for many years.
